How-to Categories

Welcome to the How-To page. Please click on a category to the left and select a 'How-To' to view.

The how-to pages are a collection of tips and techniques that have been contributed by myself and others in the art and photography community. They are meant to be simple explanations of common procedures related to art or photography.

If you would like to submit a 'how-to' of your own, feel free to send it to me in an e-mail and I will review it for inclusion on the site and send you an e-mail response.

Sandwiched Negatives -- Darkroom

Sandwiching or layering negatives produces abstract images like the one below

This image is a combination of the two negatives below.

I have found that negatives of images with dark or almost black backgrounds work well for this technique. The black background translates to transparent areas where another negative will show up well.

The images are simple to print, once you decide on two negatives. I usually examine them together on a lightbox with my loupe to tell what my print will look like.

To print, simply stack the negatives in the negative carrier of the enlarger, one on top of the other. Then do a test strip to find the correct exposure. Your exposure times will probably be a bit longer than normal, due to the fact that you are exposing through two negatives instead of one. Once you have your time, simply expose as you would normally and process like a regular print.
